"Together"- Disclosure, Sam Smith, Jimmy Napes, & Nile Rodgers

Short of induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year, Chic founder/guitarist Nile Rodgers has had a banner year in 2013. His disco-indebted "choppy" guitar playing ensured Daft Punk's Random Access Memories the 70s-sound they sought; making lead-single "Get Lucky" a pop-chart warhorse in the process. Since the robot-takeover, the music biz has been clamoring for Rodgers, including the heavily-publicized UK duo Disclosure.

Considering the group's joyous dance/electronic leanings, the pairing makes perfect sense.
Today that partnership has been realized with the release of the much-too-short "Together". Joined by producers Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes (who helped craft breakout 2012 single "Latch"), Rodgers and Disclosure have created a track as Prince-leaning as it is robotic. Rodgers introduces the song with a lightly jabbing guitar part, before the cut settles into its midtempo electronic funk-strut. Pillow-soft vocals ensure the song's humanity, even as drums stutter and glitchy synths burble ad-infinitum. As brief as the song is, its sound is timeless.

Disclosure's Settle is already out now, along with the very good sepia-colored follow-up "Apollo".
