"Every Square Inch" ft. Qrion- Ryan Hemsworth

"This song is not about kissing or anything like that," those are the only words electronic/dance/cloud-rap producer Ryan Hemsworth has to offer on Soundcloud about his wonderfully airy new instrumental "Every Square Inch". In terms of descriptions, the one crafted by the Halifax, Nova Scotia native may contain one of the more bald-faces lies in music in 2014. Hearing Qrion's aching wordless vocals paired with Hemsworth's sprite-like effects, a romantic tingle will inevitably creep up your spine. 

There's just too much abounding joy in "Every Square Inch", too many bright keyboard sparkles and carbonated drum machine fizzes to avoid the "warm tingly feeling." Listening to the song on repeat while I write this review, I can't keep from grinning. A smile spreads across my face and stays put. "Every Square Inch" is the sort of track you'd hear inspiring a character to profess their love to someone in an indie rom-com. As it grows slightly more propulsive, their heart beat quickens. And whenever they're done speaking, there's a gradually picked guitar to greet them. Vaguely reminiscent of the Microphones' "I Want Wind to Blow", the guitar becomes a cloud to rest on as you float down. Of course with such excitement, it's hard to fall very far.

"Beautiful"- A.G. Cook

At this point I'll admit to a near obsession with the ever-expanding, England originated PC Music crew. For me, "leader" Hannah Diamond's "Attachment" ranks as one of the year's best breakup pop songs. Compatriots the Lipgloss Twins' "Wannabe" continues to boggle my mind and is a chaotic effort on par with punk-rap anarchists Death Grips. Even recent additions to the group like Brooklyn producer Maxo lay claim to synth mashers that release waves of endorphins in my brains. Right now "too much of a good thing" is utterly impossible.

Today's appearance of A.G. Cook's "Beautiful" only ensures that the good times keep on rolling. I'm not big on the inevitable "synth storm" that overwhelms so many dance minded tracks, but the way it’s used on "Beautiful" is splendidly unobtrusive. Instead of acting as the linchpin of the entire track, those rapid fire synthesizers guide "Beautiful" to rousing handclaps, shifting bass, and what registers as xylophone chatter. They never blot out the sentiment Cook expresses on the track either, "baby when you look at me you that I'll be here forever, baby when I look at you I know that will be here together." Delivered in a Chipmunk effect, that emotional candor rings as loud and as clear as anything on "Beautiful". Plenty of dance artists don't mind blurring stray elements together, with "Beautiful" Cook is considerate to let you hear everything.

"Do It Again"- Robyn and Röyksopp

As a "First Listen" on the PopOnAndOn site, Swedish dance-pop singer Robyn's collaborative work "Do It Again" with Norwegian electronic-duo Röyksopp is also filed in the "perfect pop" category. Which on first take feels like a lofty proclamation. By bandying about the phrase "perfect pop" you're setting yourself up for a massive uphill-battle from the word "go." In issuing that decree, you're saying that there isn't a visible stitch or seam. “Perfect pop” means that every piece of the puzzle snaps together with relative ease.

Without being hyperbolic, "Do It Again" skirts near "perfect pop." The title-track to the pairing's upcoming EP; "Do It Again" is a dancefloor burner that leaves no one unscathed. When the word "pulsating" comes up in discussing dance tracks, "Do It Again" is the sort of track that should be described. Every bass hit and mechanized ripple supplied by Röyksopp feels primed to leap out of a chest cavity. With the shifting electronic bed they provide, there's never time to rest up. When a ripple stills itself, a dense cloud of synthesizers comes out to soak you. By continuously transitioning, there's no time to find a wrinkle in the fabric (not that one exists).

And instead of running out of breath from trying to keep up, Robyn is remarkably comfortable in this environment. "As soon as it’s done, we'll just do it again," she coolly sings. For her, the challenge of keeping it up isn't something to fear, but a thing to relish. Like Romanthony on "One More Time" she's begging for another shot to lose control. She’s praying to forget the "moment before" and the moment after. The chance will come again, as long as you're willing to wait for the buildup.
