Coldplay releases black-and-white video for "Magic"

"Stark" isn't one of the words that tends to leap out at me when I hear a Coldplay song or see one of their videos. But that's precisely the word that comes to mind when I see their new video for "Magic", the first offering from their upcoming Ghost Stories LP. Directed by Jonas Ã…kerlund and starring Ziyi Zhang (of The Grandmaster and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame) as a magician, the entirely black-and-white clip sees lead-singer Chris Martin split time as her overbearing husband and lovestruck assistant. Despite the change in color-schemes, the video still contains plenty of the earnestness people have come to love from Coldplay.

Ghost Stories is out on May 19 via Parlophone/Atlantic.

What's New(s)?

The Dead Weather offer up a new single

Back in October, the Dead Weather announced they'd be releasing singles throughout 2014, in a run-up to a new album sometime in 2015. The first single, "Open Up (That's Enough)" backed by B-side "Rough Detective", were originally only available through Third Man Records' subscription service, but yesterday the first offering was released digitally for mass consumption. "Open Up (That's Enough)" continues to rock and shriek like a banshee, and the tough-as-nails "Rough Detective" fits right in. Mosshart and White trade-off wailing their vocals and every instrument collides together in a cacophonous "blues" explosion.

No word yet on when the next installment will be dropping, but when it does you'll be able to find it on the blog.

Morrissey planning a new album

Now that he's wrapped up plugging his Autobiography, Steven Patrick Morrissey can get back to doing what he does best (no not creating mini-controversies every other week), but releasing generally great music. According to Music Press, Morrissey has signed with a new label (Harvest Records) and is preparing to release a new record before 2014 ends.

Morrissey is set to begin recording for the LP, his first since 2009's Years of Refusal, later this month in Paris with his longtime backing band. And once recording wraps up, Moz and the band are hitting the road for a tour. Morrissey's last tour in 2013 was infamously sidelined by illnesses, so here's hoping fans will get the chance to see an illness free Morrissey in 2014 as he tours a new record.

Until the album drops, enjoy Morrissey's sterling cover of the late Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love", recorded two years ago during a tour stop at the Chelsea Ballroom in Las Vegas.

Killer Mike: "Ghetto Gospel"

I haven't exactly hidden my love for Killer Mike's music on this blog. His 2013 partnering with new-found BFF El-P as Run the Jewels remains one of the most thrilling, breath-taking rap releases of the past several. But arguably the even greater product was 2012's R.A.P. Music. On R.A.P. Music, El-P manned the boards and Mike moved from discussing the importance of rap music in his life to posing "Reagan" conspiracies with the "elegance of a black elephant."

One of the more tender moments on the up-to-11 album was the slithering "Ghetto Gospel", which found Mike desperately praying for help while wondering aloud if anyone is really listening. Now the sullen track has an accompanying video where Mr. Michael Render totes a Bible, attends a church-service, and wanders through some of the more downtrodden areas of his native Atlanta. The whole time he's struggling to find balance and desperately trying to get everyone on "one accord."

What's New(s)?

The Dead Weather planning new album

Jack White project The Dead Weather is set to release a new 7" entitled "Open Up (That's Enough)" backed by "Rough Detective" through White's Third Man Record subscription service. According to a press-release, the 7" (issued on yellow vinyl) is only available in physical form to Third Man Vault Subscribers, though both tracks will eventually be released digitally. This initial offering is part of the band's plan to periodically debut new two-song sets leading up to the 2015 release of their third LP, which promises to feature the singles along with "many more album-only tracks".

2015 is a ways off, so while you wait enjoy the still great "Die By The Drop" from the band's sophomore release Sea of Cowards.

Vampire Weekend bassist announces new EP

The dust has hardly settled on Vampire Weekend's excellent 2013 release Modern Vampires of the City, but that's not stopping bassist Chris Baio from setting to work on a new EP. Entitled Mira, the dance/electronic EP follows up last year's Sunburn EP. The EP is out October 28 through Australian label Future Classic and to mark the announcement, Baio has released a sunny, island inflected remix of "Regular Town" by Sydney-band New Navy.

New Major Lazer

Continuing their dancehall dominance, Diplo's Major Lazer project has produced the arresting "Turn Around". For their latest world conquest, they've employed the services of duo Zeds Dead and dancehall legend Elephant Man (who previously collaborated with the group on "Wind Up" from Free the Universe). This new track sounds like downed powerlines slithering through a late-night beach party hosted by an alcohol soaked MC. In other words, its the sort of offering you'd expect from the Major.

"Love Interruption"- Jack White

We've reached a point where nothing Jack White does is surprising anymore. A collabo with Stephen Colbert? Sure go for it Jack. Faux-country with the Insane Clown Posse? Check. Rubbing elbows with Tom Jones? Why not? But when news came this morning that Jack White would be releasing a solo LP entitled Blunderbuss in April I was skeptical. This is a man who has spent the last decade plus with someone by his side, a person to bounce his musical ambitions off of. With a solo release, that's all gone and the only thing stopping Jack White is Jack White.

To celebrate the news, White released the first single "Love Interruption." The humble blues affair wouldn't sound out of place on a Dead Weather LP and White swaps his electric for acoustic. He sticks to things he wants out of love, backed by powerful vocals from an unnamed female vocalist. The single is out for purchase on his site.
