Track Attack- "The Scientist" (Coldplay, 2002)

"Isn't it a pity
Now, isn't it a shame
How we break each other's hearts
And cause each other pain
How we take each other's love
Without thinking anymore
Forgetting to give back
Isn't it a pity."
Those gorgeously simplistic, sobering words were sung by ex-Beatle George Harrison for 1970's "Isn't It A Pity (Version One)". Whispered underneath funereal orchestration, the words themselves ring loud and clear. No matter how hard we try, no matter what we do, we're bound to break someone's heart. It's a certainty as great as the Sun rising in the east and setting in the west. Often times we do it without even realizing it. And the reason is simple: we're imperfect and imperfection breeds pain.

With this pain and the Harrison classic on his mind, Coldplay's Chris Martin sat down in 2001 to fill in the missing piece of upcoming sophomore LP A Rush of Blood to the Head. Martin's admitted  "The Scientist" was born out of an inability to work on Harrison's tune and the moment the song’s four-chord piano melody rings out; you're hearing a half-remembered cover. Granted, the cover in question is one performed with supreme confidence. Where the piano is one of many instruments squeezed into "Isn't It A Pity"'s group-portrait, it stands alone for the first verse of "The Scientist". It's all a weary Martin can prop himself up on.

"Weary" is really the only way to describe Martin's falsetto here. While it would be lambasted in subsequent years, in 2002 it was relatively new and mysterious. So beguilingly powerful it was, Rolling Stone writer Rob Sheffield was moved to say the finale (which relies heavily on falsetto) "could raise every hair on the back of your neck." Like the piano notes, each phrase is allowed equal time to writhe around before being shooed away. That said, certain lyrics are clearly given emotional precedence in A Rush of Blood to the Head's second single. Martin's on record as saying "That's just about girls. It's weird that whatever else is on your mind, whether it's the downfall of global economics or terrible environmental troubles, the thing that always gets you most is when you fancy someone." Despite whatever sappiness drips out of that sentiment, its truth speaks as loud as Martin's heart in the song. There have been times when in the throes of love, the first (and last thing) I think of on a given day is a particular person. After a certain point, days begin to feel cyclical because their bookends are the same. Everything blurs together into a haze of passion and dejection.

Throughout the slow-builder, Martin is desperate to "go back to the start," to a time when the only emotion was unbridled happiness. As Jonny Buckland's shiftless acoustic guitar starts up and Will Champion's drums gently enter, Martin's begging to be haunted again. He can't keep from looking back to when things were significantly less difficult. For Martin, the romance has ended but he's still replaying individual scenes in his mind. Late nights spent sharing secrets are remembered long after the film ran out. Whether or not those memories can materialize again is unknown. If they do, it won't be easy.

What's New(s)?

Coldplay release new Avicii collabo single "A Sky Full of Stars"/Announce "scavenger hunt"

The two previous singles "Magic" and "Midnight" that Coldplay have shared from their upcoming 6th LP Ghost Stories have both been remarkably restrained. Instead of employing the traditional Coldplay swell, Chris Martin and company have stuck to hushed whispers and somber tones.

That changes with the quartet's third single "A Sky Full of Stars". Granted the swell found here is markedly different thanks to the feature from EDM-staple Avicii. Now Chris Martin's falsetto cries are emboldened by shrieking synthesizers and heart-thudding drums. But rather than stretch the "new direction" to thin, the band eases back into a light acoustic shuffle for the lovestruck verses. Even with heavyweight backing, Coldplay can't resist being tender.

In addition to the new track, Coldplay has announced an "international scavenger hunt" to promote the new LP. According to "The Guardian" the band has hidden the lyrics to all 9 Ghost Stories tracks in libraries around the world. The hunt began yesterday when their Twitter account pointed fans in Mexico City to an envelope Vasconcelos library. Each contains a lyric sheet penned by lead-singer Chris Martin and one specially selected envelope will have a "golden ticket" to the band's July 1 at Royal Albert Hall.

of Montreal releasing documentary The Past Is Grotesque Animal

Having had the fortune to see Elephant 6 members of Montreal at this year's installment of Middle of the Map Fest in Kansas City, I know how cinematic the band's psychedelic presence is. Now the upcoming documentary The Past Is A Grotesque Animal (named for the Hissing Fauna Are You The Destroyer? epic) will capture the Kevin Barnes group in all its blown-out, kaleidoscopic glory.

Directed by Jason Miller, the music doc  will focus both on the band and Kevin Barnes himself out on tour, with appearances by frequent collaborators like Janelle Monáe. The project, initially funded through a Kickstarter campaign, will be released through Oscilloscope Laboratories and also made available on iTunes. View the official trailer below, which features the aforementioned Monáe.

Hear unreleased Arcade Fire Reflektor cut "Get Right"

Arcade Fire found the connector on 2013's towering Reflektor and now fans have found an unreleased effort from the LP. Entitled "Get Right", the song initially appeared on a short advertisement before disappearing into the ether.  Now Exclaim is reporting fans of the Montreal-group have fished out a lo-fi, live recording of the Reflektor outtake.

There's no word on where the faux 50s rave-up emanates from, but you can find the track here and view the group's recently released behind-the-scenes tour short below.

What's New(s)?

Mastodon release "High Road"

It's been two-plus years since prog/sludge-metal band Mastodon dropped their fifth album The Hunter, but soon that will change with the release of Once More Round the Sun. Though details are relatively sparse, the Atlanta-based quartet previewed the upcoming LP today with "High Road". Produced by Nick Raskulinecz, who was at the helm for The Hold Steady's Teeth Dreams, "High Road" is a four minute climb from muddy snarls and churning guitars to ascendant choruses. No word yet if Once More Round the Sun will be a concept record in the vein of Blood Mountain or Leviathan, but "High Road" certainly possesses that same "epic" quality to it.

According to Spin, the record will be out sometime in June on Warner Brothers and include tracks entitled "Ember City" and "Diamonds in the Witch House", which features vocals from Scott Kelly of Neurosis. You can listen to "High Road" here now.

Belle & Sebastian cover "Don't Stop Believin"

I don't think it's any secret that people love to sing along to Journey's "Don't Stop Believin". There are certainly songs that are considered more important musically and are more critically respected, but few if any are performed as frequently as "Don't Stop Believin". Odds are at any given bar in America (on any given night) you'll hear the song sliding out of the speakers. And by the time the chorus hits, at least a few denizens will have set their drinks aside and fully committed to replicating Steve Perry's anthemic vocals.

But of course the real joy of hearing "Don't Stop Believin" isn't listening to a spot-on replication, but a gloriously sloppy cover. And Belle and Sebastian's take on the tune for Songs For Kids Foundation at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta belongs in that latter category. Stuart Murdoch and company go through an abridged version of the rock classic that sadly excises the signature guitar solo, but replaces it with a cantering acoustic guitar that's hard not to nod along to.

Coldplay announce new tour

Despite their numerous detractors, Coldplay's live performances are almost unimpeachable. I had the opportunity to see them during their Viva La Vida tour in 2008 and it remains one of the five best shows I've ever seen. And in anticipation of their 6th LP Ghost Stories, the band will hit the road next week for a brief tour run. The six-show stint includes a release day concert at UCLA's Royce Hall, a far-cry from the expansive arenas they often inhabit. You'll find the dates below, along with the stark video for recent single "Magic" featuring Ziyi Zhang of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Tour Dates:
4/25 Cologne, Germany - E-Werk
5/5 New York, NY - Beacon Theatre
5/19 Los Angeles, CA - Royce Hall
5/28 Paris, France - Casino de Paris
6/12 Tokyo, Japan - Dome City Hall
7/1 London, England - Royal Albert Hall

Coldplay releases black-and-white video for "Magic"

"Stark" isn't one of the words that tends to leap out at me when I hear a Coldplay song or see one of their videos. But that's precisely the word that comes to mind when I see their new video for "Magic", the first offering from their upcoming Ghost Stories LP. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund and starring Ziyi Zhang (of The Grandmaster and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame) as a magician, the entirely black-and-white clip sees lead-singer Chris Martin split time as her overbearing husband and lovestruck assistant. Despite the change in color-schemes, the video still contains plenty of the earnestness people have come to love from Coldplay.

Ghost Stories is out on May 19 via Parlophone/Atlantic.

Chance the Rapper covers Coldplay

Chance the Rapper's affinity for all things British began during his odd-couple partnering with James Blake on the dizzying "Life Round Here" remix and it continues today courtesy of his "Fix You" cover. At a show in Syracuse, the Chicago goofball slowed down the show to perform a no-muss no-fuss take on the X&Y track. Chance incorporates drums and the signature piano into the tune, and the only thing missing is that signature Coldplay swell. It's far from the greatest performance of the song ever delivered, but it's genuinely endearing.

Chance is currently out on the "Social Experiment Tour" which still has a month left before wrapping up in Miami. Check out tour dates and his low-key cover below.

"Fix You"

See Lou Reed's final interview

During a photoshoot for Parrot ZIK headphones in late September, Velvet Underground frontman blessed director Farida Khelfa with what would prove to be his final interview before his passing on October 27. In the six minute clip, an incisive 71 year old Reed recounts buying his first guitar, rhapsodizes on the link between Beethoven and hip-hop, and his lifelong exploration of sound. Near the beginning when asked "why do you do music?" Reed wryly jokes "I love it...you do what you love or you get arrested".

Yoko Ono & the RZA team-up

In 2010 Wu-Tang masterming the RZA and Yoko Ono took to the stage in Los Angeles to play chess and do duets in what is easily one of the most unexpected collaborative efforts ever. Now that piece of "performance-art" will be permanently emblazoned on a 10'' single commemorating the event. The record will feature live recordings of the lurching fertilization cycle saga "Seed of Joy/Life Is A Struggle" backed by Yoko Ono's Plastic Band's "Greenfield Morning I Pushed An Empty Baby Carriage All Over The City". Reportedly this is round one in a series of collaborative releases from Ono, so I can only imagine the artists we've yet to hear team-up with Yoko.

Coldplay contributes to Catching Fire

Catching Fire is bound to see one of the biggest releases of 2013, so it's only appropriate that one of the biggest bands in music (whatever that designation means circa 2013 is up for debate) Coldplay is contributing to the mammoth undertaking. "Atlas" is Chris Martin and company's first new music since 2011's kaleidoscopic "concept-album" Mylo Xyloto. The song begins grounded by Martin's restrained piano and muted vocals before breaking free and ascending for the heavens in typical Coldplay fashion. In other words, it'll sound great during a cinematic experience.

Catching Fire hits theaters November 22, so look for the soundtrack to hit shelves around the same time.

Arcade Fire...The Plot Thickens

Arcade Fire continues to borrow further down the rabbit hole as the October 29 crawls closer. Wednesday, the blog was reporting the band was definitely doing something at 9pm on September 9 and now it appears their plan is to release a new single entitled "Reflektor" accompanied by a video directed by Anton Corbijn. But that's not all. Arcade Fire Tube is indicating plans to release a "Reflektor" 12'' with the above artwork (a possible callback to the Stones Some Girls) in select record stores throughout the U.S. on September 9.
Pictures of a tracklist on the back of the release have also been circulating, and are yet to be confirmed.

And if all that weren't enough to satiate your appetite, the Canadian septet is believed to have played a secret show at a small salsa club in Montreal on Wednesday. No video/pictures of the set have circulated, though Montreal blog The Main is reporting the band debuted a bevy of new tempo shifting songs that: "Imagine the Talking Heads’ "Once in a Lifetime", but if David Bowie had written it while on vacation." Again much of this is still conjecture at this point, but come Monday a part of this ever-growing mystery will be solved.
