M.I.A. to tour with A$AP Ferg

In support of last year's under-appreciated Matangi, musical firestarter M.I.A. will be going on a late-spring North American tour with none other than A$AP Ferg. According to Brooklyn Vegan, she'll kick off the tour with a festival date in Miami before teaming up with the A$AP Worldwide member in Washington D.C. on April 27th. Once her tour with the new Shabba concludes, she'll embark on a European for additional festival dates. Given both M.I.A.'s and Ferg's dancehall obsessions, I can only hope this tour results in a collabo effort.

Girl Talk and Freeway set to release Broken Ankles EP

 

All the way back in October on the blog, news surfaced that sample wizard Girl Talk was partnering with Philly-Freezer, Freeway himself to craft an EP tentatively titled Broken Ankles. According to Pitchfork, that EP is now official and will be available April 8 for free download via Datpiff. The 6-track release will also feature rappers: Waka Flocka Flame, Jadakiss, and Young Chris. 

In an official press-release for the EP, Girl Talk (born Gregg Gillis) discussed the stylistic differences between this upcoming record and prior albums: 

"I wanted to work closer to traditional song structure compared to my last few albums, but still include some detailed sample splicing and change-ups when it felt appropriate. The overall structure is what I thought worked best with Freeway's style... It's always important to me to have an album that works as a whole; something that has a calculated flow to it, which is intended to be listened to front to back."

To promote Broken Ankles, Girl Talk and Freeway have teased a video for "Tolerated", their collaboration with Waka Flocka Flame. You can view it below, along with the official Broken Ankles tracklist.

Girl Talk hints at collabo EP

Though details are currently scarce, Pittsburgh-native Gregg Gillis better known as mash-up wizard Girl Talk has announced his upcoming project, a collaborative EP tentatively titled Broken Ankles with rapper Freeway. "Philly Freezer" has kept relatively quiet on the partnering so far, save for a series of retweets and the somewhat cryptic "reinvent yourself." 

In other news, Gillis recently sat down with MTV Hive to discuss his 6th LP, which he said was currently in the "prep phrase" and aiming to incorporate more "traditional production." Even with this new focus on "experimentation", Gillis is promising a record that's "sonically similar" to what's come before. 

The aforementioned Broken Ankles EP would not be Girl Talk's first foray into the rap world, as he previously collaborated with Dipset-original Jim Jones on the booming soul of "Believe in Magic" which you can check out below. 

Boldy James teams with Odd Future/Da$h

Detroit hardhead Boldy James has a new album out October 15 through Decon/Mass Appeal and today we've been given the latest taste of the LP, entirely produced by the Alchemist. The subdued sample of "Reform School" gives James and guests: Earl Sweatshirt (a self-pronounced fan), Domo Genesis, and Da$h ample time to stretch out and s*** talk. "Speak soft, sock a fan" Earl laconically spits in his verse, and the beat here captures the perfect headspace between laying back and lashing out.

My 1st Chemistry set is out October 15 and will also feature: Action Bronson, Freeway, and Vince Staples among others. 

Gorillaz "Whirlwind"

Over the weekend, the "world of the Plastic Beach" was temporarily revitalized, when Gorillaz mastermind Damon Albarn delivered the previously unheard take "Whirlwind" during his guest-DJ spot of BBC Radio 2. A holdover from the Plastic Beach sessions, the instrumental "Whirlwind" features the Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music. The orchestra performs alternating exploratory and elegiac music, before the string section wafts away into the air after an all-too-short minute and 41 seconds.

Gary, Indiana gangsta-rapper Freddie Gibbs' new mixtape Cold Day in Hell is now available. Gibbs has long been promising the tape and now we have another dose of his rapid-fire Midwest-style. The tape features CTE labelmate Young Jeezy, as well as Three 6 Mafia mastermind Juicy J, and Philadelphia rap-stalwart Freeway with production by Big K.R.I.T. and DJ Burn One, amongst others. No word yet on when Gibbs' debut LP Baby-Faced Killa will drop. While waiting on the download, enjoy this cut from the tape.
