Burial's new EP Rival Dealer now streaming

As previously mentioned on the blog, shadowy dubstep producer Burial has a new EP dropping on December 16th, which is sure to shred more than a few year-end best-of lists. As We All Want Someone points out that EP, entitled Rival Dealer, is available for streaming now. Before today, the release was expected to contain three tracks and hover around 28 minutes, and now that has proven to be true. 

Listen to the tracks: "Rival Dealer", "Hiders" and "Come Down to Us" below, and look for Rival Dealer to be officially released Monday via Hyperdub.

James Murphy working on LCD Soundsystem's final-show live album

Former LCD-Soundsystem frontman James Murphy has had busy 2013: producing Arcade Fire's Reflektor album, remixing hero David Bowie, directing a short-film, and concocting a signature blend of coffee just to name a few. Now he's adding to that exhaustive list by crafting a live-album to document his former band's final show. LCD Soundsystem previously issued the concert film Shut Up and Play the Hits, but according to Murphy an album will soon be out to pair with the film. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Murphy had this to say:

And finally, Jesus, the f***ing live album. It’s killing me. That’s been just murder... I mixed it significantly differently than the film [Shut Up and Play the Hits], because the film is mixed for your eye and the record is mixed for your ears... It was like the concert happened, and then I spent the next year and a half f***ing with it. I was like, “I’m done! Ah, s***. I gotta go deal with the f***ing movie.” I had to do Shut Up and Play the Hits, and dealing with the live footage, and mixing all the sound for the live footage, and then I had to do the whole four-hour concert and edit all that footage and mix everything. It was great, but also, like, s***ting hell. It really just refused to die. I guess somebody else would just have someone else deal with the movie, but I’m an idiot and wanted to mix all that audio.

 

Murphy also mentioned in the article, he's planning on making his own music again sometime next year, which will apparently be recorded in a new studio he's building. No word yet on when that singing turnstile project will happen.

David Bowie debuts new video

James Murphy's near 10-minute remix of David Bowie's "Love is Lost" is a mammoth clattering track, and now the song has a fittingly epic video to accompany it. Shot on a low-budget befitting the Blair Witch Project ($13 according to Bowie), the video features the shape-shifting star playing with a series of disturbing puppets, before becoming a bloodied up one himself. In short, it provides the perfect ghastly experience for a Halloween celebration.

The 3-disc deluxe edition of David Bowie's The Next Day is out next Tuesday November 5 via Columbia.

Superchunk cover the Misfits

Keeping up with today's ghoulish theme, Merge-founders Superchunk have provided a cover of the mangled Misfits classic "Children in Heat". That's bassist Laura Ballance in the artwork, rocking the Misfits signature devilock look and turning in a raucous performance with cohorts Mac McCaughan, Jim Wilbur, and Jon Wurster. McCaughan can't quite reach Danzig's punker meets rockabilly vocal approach, but he performs an admirable snarl; his heart firmly in his throat. 

Superchunk's cover comes free to anyone who signs up for Or Thousands of Prizes, a 7-inch set celebrating Merge's 25th anniversary and featuring music by:The Mountain Goats, Destroyer, Lambchop, and more. You'll also receive a box to place your set in, so what more could you ask for?

Arcade Fire Reflektor

 

In Friday's edition of "What's New(s)?" I featured a clearinghouse of coverage on the upcoming Arcade Fire release Reflektor. There were promises of another show tonight on 9/9 (which will be occurring), whispers of a possible tracklist, and plans to release the title single. The single "Reflektor" is now out and fan account Arcade Fire Tube is pointing to  the New Zealand iTunes listing as evidence that there's a double album in store. As for the Anton Corbijn directed video, it's out now and the nearly 8 minute piece features the band in noirish scenes dawning giant heads that would make N64-era Donkey Kong proud. And as if that weren't enough, the band is also offering an interactive-video for the James Murphy produced title-track (which features backing vocals from David Bowie), in a similar vein to the still breathless project the "The Wilderness Downtown". Finally, the picture you see above of an August Rodin sculpture of Greek figures Orpheus and Eurydice may in fact be the album cover for the mysterious Reflektor when it hits shelves on October 29.

My Bloody Valentine hit the U.S.

 

It's been a long time since My Bloody Valentine properly savaged the eardrums of their fans across the pond, but come November they'll be doing just that. The shoegaze perfecters are touring in support of their stellar new album m b v and will hit 5 U.S. cities while also stopping over in Canada for a pair of shows. If you've never experienced the endless waves of MBV reverb wash over you live, this may just be your best opportunity to take a dip.
