Lykke Li releases new song "Gunshot"

Swedish pop singer Lykke Li's third LP I Never Learn, her follow up to 2011's ruminating Wounded Rhymes, is out next month. Li has previously said the record will conclude a trilogy that began with her debut release Youth Novels in 2008, and that it will be more of a "singer-songwriter record than pop." Li's already released the achingly fragile "No Rest for the Wicked" and the distanced folk-leaning "Love Me Like I'm Not Made of Stone", but her latest effort "Gunshot" might be the most confessional of the three. Over an aquatic drum throb, a reverberated Li chases after a love she knows has Chernobyl levels of toxicity. And still she begs over and over again for that love to come back, if only for a night. If these are kinds of confessions Li's been working on, I Never Learn will be a bitter epilogue to a brilliant trilogy.

Hear a recently discovered J Dill track now

Pay Jay, the imprint run by deceased producer J Dilla's family estate, is putting out a new record that rounds up previously unheard efforts from the rap-icon. Entitled Give 'Em What They Want, the EP culls together three separate vocal tracks Dilla laid down in 2001, along with two instrumentals to round out the effort. Today the first of those tracks, the booming title-track, dropped. Co-produced with Supa Dave West, "Give 'Em What They Want" gives a glimpse of a more rugged Dilla than many are used to seeing. But by the end, the brash histrionics shuffle off and a hypnotic, Eastern-tinged instrumental steps in. Proving once again that part of Dilla's appeal is a profound ability to make every permutation of his style a "must-listen."

Give 'Em What They Want drops May 6 and can be purchased through Rap Cats, and tracks from the EP may be featured on the long-lost Dilla album The Diary.

OFF! fight Dave Foley and Brian Posehn played fascists in "Red White and Black"

This has already been an incredible week for music videos. Yesterday not only saw the release of the gut-busting video for Real Estate's "Crime" featuring TV's Andy Daly, but also the Nazi-defying "Red White and Black" by hardcore-punk supergroup OFF! While the song itself moves a million miles faster than Real Estate's loping "Crime", both videos feature a madcap sense of humor. In "Red White and Black", Kids in the Hall star Dave Foley and Mr. Show/Sarah Silverman Show actor Brian Posehn play Nazis nervously preparing for a music gig at a bar. A black biker-gang gets wind of the show and by the end all the Nazi-scum is driven out of the bar. And if brawling black bikers and Nazis portrayed by Foley and Posehn weren't enough, the "Red White and Black" video features cameos from: David Yow (Jesus Lizard), Danny Carey (Tool), Dale Crover (Melvins), and Jack Grisham (TSOL).

De La Soul releases J Dilla mixtape for download

Earlier this month I reviewed "Dilla Plugged In", a warm bare-bones affair that acted as the first sample of the pairing between the legendary De La Soul and fallen hero J Dilla. Now we have more than a sample, as the Long Island trio has released Smell the D.A.I.S.Y. The entire mixtape, which runs 11 tracks, sprinkles reworked De La lyrics over unreleased Dilla beats and has one feature from frequent Method Man collaborator Redman. You can download the tape now for free through BitTorrent and cop the Dilla documentary Still Shining along with it.

Along with Smell the D.A.I.S.Y., De La Soul have two new albums planned for 2014 entitled You're Welcome and Premium Soul on the Rocks, which will be produced by DJ Premier and Pete Rock.

More Johnny Cash albums of unreleased material could be on the way

Yesterday, Out Among the Stars, the latest posthumous release from Johnny Cash dropped via Columbia. But apparently another collection of unreleased material from the Man in Black maybe just around the corner.

According to Cash's son John Carter Cash "There are a few things that are in the works right now – probably four or five albums if we wanted to release everything," he speculated in an interview with the Guardian. Cash went on to say that there maybe "three or four"more albums worth of material his father recorded during the storied "American Recording" sessions with go-to producer Rick Rubin. 

In that same piece, Rubin backed Cash's claims. "We released the work we had been planning to release along with John [Carter Cash] and the idea of the Unearthed boxset of outtakes was his idea," Rubin affirmed. He went on to add, "We will probably put out additional Unearthed material recorded since the last Unearthed box, in keeping with John’s wishes."  With so much of Cash's work still coming down the pipeline, the Man in Black is becoming the country equivalent of 2Pac.

Until a new collection of Cash tunes surfaces, there's Out Among the Stars to enjoy along with the terrific video for album cut "She Used to Love Me A Lot".

Kate Bush adds more dates to first tour in 35 years

Last Friday, the Guardian reported that noted British pop-perfectionist Kate Bush was embarking on her first tour since 1979. And now, before Bush has even played a note of a single show, she's expanded the tour. Pitchfork notes her Hammersmith Odeon residency "Before the Dawn" has expanded from "15 to 22 shows" and now includes gigs on "on September 20, 23, 24, 26, 27, 30, and October 1, as well as the originally announced dates on August 26, 27, 29, and 30, as well as on September 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, 13, 16, 17,
 and 19."

If you can't make it to any of those shows, you can always enjoy the video for Bush's classic 1985 track "Running Up That Hill".

"Dilla Plugged In"- De La Soul (Prod. J Dilla)

"Simple" that's the only way to describe "Dilla Plugged In", the first taste of De La Soul's upcoming Smell the D.A.I.S.Y. mixtape, which will feature the hip-hop icons tackling J Dilla beats. That adjective could be appended to every single part of this offering. There's the bare-bones cover, recalling the trio's 3 Feet High and Rising which turned 25 last month. A reconfigured Dilla beat from the Old Donuts collection, epoxied by piano chords and impossibly on-point drumming. Even the group's rapping deserves the term; so laid-back that Pos' doesn't seem to mind repeating his lead-off verse in the mission-defining "Plug Tunin'".

But minimalism can be absolutely marvelous and "Dilla Plugged In" is a perfect example. Give the aforementioned drumbeat a round or two and you'll be nodding along in unison. Dilla's drums have long been praised and in an effort like this, you begin to understand what all the hubbub is about. Even Posdnuos can't keep from commenting, "Drums are heard sounding off each and every person" he giddily rattles off. Those piano chords are imbued with similar warmth, ringing out without clanging. And then there's the "Plugs" heralding the D.A.I.S.Y. Age like 1989 never left. "Musical notes will send a new motto," Trugoy promises without a hint of the disaffection that marked De La Soul is Dead. More than just "capturing the essence of Dilla" De La reclaims an entire era. Not bad for something so "simple." 

Smell the D.A.I.S.Y. is coming soon, along with a new album entitled You're Welcome and Premium Soul on the Rocks, which will be produced entirely by DJ Premier and Pete Rock.

Track Attack- "Much More" (De La Soul) (Prod. J Dilla)

Whenever I'm tagging rap songs in my library, I always arrive at the question of should I include production credits? It's the same question I often find myself asking about features. As I weigh one side versus the other, I'll wonder "is their performance such a vital component of the track that if it were subtracted the song would suffer?" If I nod in agreement to the question, they get their proper credit.

There's no questioning when it comes to producer J Dilla. One of rap's all-time best, the Detroit-native came up with Pharcyde before falling into place as a vital component of the Soulquarians movement. It was there, while producing for R&B revivalists D'Angelo and Erykah Badu he perfected his sacrosanct formula of: warm but heavy drums, calculated snaps, tender soul vocals, invitingly obscure samples, and hypnotic guitar riffs.

While De La Soul's 2004 track "Much More" lacks anything in the way of "riffage", everything else is firmly in place. Yummy Bingham's chirpy vocals give the eerie keyboard figure of "Strawberry 23" a much needed makeover as a sped-up "Love Ballad" dances in the background. Dilla's trademark drums (which Kanye once admitted to "stealing") knock louder than a SWAT Team at 6 in the morning, but refrain from roughing the listener up. And in that "tough passivity" hip-hop's hippies Posdnuos and Trugoy find their place. When Pos' promises "lacerations" it's only to an obstinate microphone. Trugoy (aka Dave) meanwhile is content to kick his feet up and button mash on the X-Box. "House rules, so house takes bank" he matter-of-factly rattles off with the sort of weary knowledge only a vet could possess. 

Still Dilla is the ultimate vet in the equation. When he shuffled off forever in 2006, just 3 days after releasing his masterwork Donuts, he was a relative unknown in commercial rap culture. Part of this had to do with his idiosyncratic approach (few if any sound like Dilla), but it can also be attributed to his shy attitude. Besides rocking hats to mask his face, he frequently crafted tracks as part of "The Ummah" so that his role was never clear. 8 years after his death he may be more widely recognized, but he's as enigmatic as ever. When Bingham's singing "much more is what we got in store" in the chorus she's telling the story of J Dilla.

Arcade Fire announce tour

After all of the "microscopic" shows and salsa-club appearances, Arcade Fire are embarking on a full-blown arena tour, worthy of the spectacle that's surrounded their fourth album Reflektor. The Montreal-based band's tour will take them through much of North America from March to August of next year, not suprisingly wrapping up in their hometown in August. No word yet on whether or not frontman Win Butler will be performing with a mariachi band before the shows.

"Reflektor"

Unreleased J Dilla tracks coming soon

 

On November 29, clothing label Akomplice will be releasing a new line in partnership with Joey Bada$$ and the J Dilla Foundation. Accompanying an "angelic graphic" of the now-deceased cloud-rap forerunner J Dilla, there will be a 7" vinyl pressing featuring unreleased efforts from both of the performers. The Dilla offering "Two Lips" was originally released with the treasure-trove Lost Scrolls collection, and the Joey Bada$$$ B-side will see the boom-bap revivalist tackling the same beat. According to a press-release, all proceeds will be going to youth in music programs.

A$AP Rocky drops video for "Phoenix"

Following the airy, fashion-focused video for "Fashion Killa", A$AP Rocky has dropped a similarly low-key clip to accompany Long.Live.A$AP cut "Phoenix". Shot by director Francesco Carrozzini, the stark video sees Michael K. Williams (Omar of The Wire and Chalky White of Boardwalk Empire) and model Joan Smalls as a feuding couple who gradually turn to violence. "Lord Flacko" mostly sticks to the sidelines of this moody drama, knowing precisely when to "take cover".

In Michael K. Williams news, the Brooklyn-born actor is still slated to portray to portray the late Ol Dirty Bastard in an upcoming biopic entitled Dirty White Boy. To see Williams rapping live as the fellow "Zoo" native, head here.
