Burial's new EP Rival Dealer now streaming

As previously mentioned on the blog, shadowy dubstep producer Burial has a new EP dropping on December 16th, which is sure to shred more than a few year-end best-of lists. As We All Want Someone points out that EP, entitled Rival Dealer, is available for streaming now. Before today, the release was expected to contain three tracks and hover around 28 minutes, and now that has proven to be true. 

Listen to the tracks: "Rival Dealer", "Hiders" and "Come Down to Us" below, and look for Rival Dealer to be officially released Monday via Hyperdub.

James Murphy working on LCD Soundsystem's final-show live album

Former LCD-Soundsystem frontman James Murphy has had busy 2013: producing Arcade Fire's Reflektor album, remixing hero David Bowie, directing a short-film, and concocting a signature blend of coffee just to name a few. Now he's adding to that exhaustive list by crafting a live-album to document his former band's final show. LCD Soundsystem previously issued the concert film Shut Up and Play the Hits, but according to Murphy an album will soon be out to pair with the film. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Murphy had this to say:

And finally, Jesus, the f***ing live album. It’s killing me. That’s been just murder... I mixed it significantly differently than the film [Shut Up and Play the Hits], because the film is mixed for your eye and the record is mixed for your ears... It was like the concert happened, and then I spent the next year and a half f***ing with it. I was like, “I’m done! Ah, s***. I gotta go deal with the f***ing movie.” I had to do Shut Up and Play the Hits, and dealing with the live footage, and mixing all the sound for the live footage, and then I had to do the whole four-hour concert and edit all that footage and mix everything. It was great, but also, like, s***ting hell. It really just refused to die. I guess somebody else would just have someone else deal with the movie, but I’m an idiot and wanted to mix all that audio.

 

Murphy also mentioned in the article, he's planning on making his own music again sometime next year, which will apparently be recorded in a new studio he's building. No word yet on when that singing turnstile project will happen.

New Burial album on the way

 As with everything shadowy dubstep producer Burial does, the announcement of a new EP comes with scant few details. According to NPR's All Songs Considered the South London native is releasing an as of now unnamed EP through premiere post-dubstep label Hyperdub. The EP, dropping on December 16, will reportedly feature three tracks and run 28 minutes long.

This is the second December in a row Burial's dropped a new EP, following last year's masterful Truant/Rough Sleeper release. Check "Truant" out below, along with the post-apocalyptic Four Tet collabo "Unreleased" which Four Tet debuted back in October on Rinse FM.

Young Turks announce 2013 compilation

 

Throughout the year British label Young Turks has curated a singles series featuring artists The xx, Sampha, John Talabot, Pional, Koreless, and more. On December 9 they'll be collecting all of that material together for a 2013 compilation featuring the original series along with bonus tracks from SBTRKT and FKA Twigs. Also included will be the final installment of the series, featuring Sampha project Short Stories. The CD-edition of the release will also house artwork cards to accompany each of the 8 tracks.

Stream Neil Young's Live at the Cellar Door release now

Few things in live music are more intimate and frequently harrowing than a Neil Young solo show. Next Tuesday Young's aching voice and ragged guitar will return for the latest entry into the Neil Young Archives, Live at the Cellar Door. Recorded over of series of six shows in 1970 at the Washington D.C. venue, the album features Neil Young dipping into songs from the fresh After the Gold Rush for tunes like "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" along with new older Buffalo Springfield cuts and what is the official debut of eventual Harvest track "Old Man".

While the album doesn't officially drop until next Tuesday, it's available for streaming and on first run-through the thing sounds absolutely gorgeous. Check it out below.

"Unreleased"- Four Tet & Burial

This past weekend, electronic producer Four Tet took over Britain's Rinse FM for a marathon eight-hour set, begun in the most minor-key fashion imaginable: with a previously unreleased cut between him and abstruse "dubstep" artist Burial. The two have an undeniable chemistry that reaches back to 2009 with the dying-robot sounds of "Moth" and shudders every so often to the present. "I hope someone is recording this for YouTube" Four Tet sedately jokes, but the moment the acidic rain and mechanic clatter quiets and the vocals step forward from the shadows, you're glad they did. The wraith-like voice is a pure Burial affectation; the sound of a withering 90s R&B sample echoing throughout an empty haunted house. "My heart just won't let me be right," the disembodied voice of Mariah Carey bleats over the palpitating bassline. Soon the spectral presence shifts into a wordless choir invisible as an apocalyptic gust picks up in the background. Ghosts never really go away though, they only flee for a time and soon the spirituous performer is back, picking up from a past life. Now the apparition is imbued with an undeniable pain, intermittently screaming while the last rain droplets fall on the eaves of an abandoned industrial building. "We never got anything out of it" Four Tet proclaims in that opening, but the ensuing collaboration says otherwise.

Four Tet's new album Beautiful Rewind is currently available in the UK and will drop in the U.S. 10/15 through the artist's Text imprint.
